simply amazing December 16, 2008 this book is my favorite book of all time this book is simply life changing, i have never run across a better book about christianity and i work in a christian book store haha this book is a must have
Nice Cover December 11, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I read this book as a favor for a new believer whom I have spent many years talking to about the gospel.
He told me I had to read this book because it is just like talking to a regular guy, just like us, about Christianity.
I gave him a reply. I gave him the Holiness of God by RC Sproul. The Holiness of God is a great book which does exactly the opposite of what David Miller does. David Miller basically removes a God Who is Holy and replaces Him with another god who is one of his own making and easy to live with. The one he finds through various adventures at college, or at a coffee shop.
In Blue Like Jazz, David Miller seems to look for God in every place possible except where the truth of God is found, in scripture.
This book is like reading someone's journal who is confused. If you want to know that someone else is confused about Christianity, than this book will comfort you. Unfortunately the comfortable feeling will only last for a few moments until you realize you have not figured out anything new.
That is where you probably buy his next book or try something else.
Refreshing December 7, 2008 Miller does a really great job of justifying how Christianity really changed his life and does not try to pretend that he is or was a perfect Christian, unlike Shane Claiborne (I read this book after reading the Irresistible Revolution). His contributions to his community were really wonderful and inspiring, without making the reader feel too out of touch with the author. He's just a normal guy with an incredible heart and love for God who knows how to spread it to every person he knows and loves (and reads his book).
Nothing groundbreaking, would give it a 2.5 if I could. November 29, 2008 The book was OK. I finished it. There was nothing I would call groundbreaking in this tome. He's an engaging writer in his own way (sory of reminds me of a poor-man's Bill Bryson).
Strangely enough, the front cover states, "Nonreligious Thoughts On Christian Spirituality". This is untrue. Take, for example, the last paragraph: "...But what song will you sing when your soul gets set free?...If you haven't done it in a while, pray and talk to Jesus...Ask Him to forgive you of self-addiction, ask Him to put a song in your heart."
Now, whether or not one agrees with his thoughts, this doesn't sound very "Nonreligious," does it?
Jazz like me... November 16, 2008 Have you ever encountered someone who seems to be on the same wave-length... the second pea in your pod... ? This book was that very experience for me.
